Forbes Ranks El Paso 20th on List of U.S. Cities With Worst Drivers

Nationally renowned for its cuisine, low crime rate, and over 300 days of sunshine, El Paso can now also be noted for its ranking on a recent list of cities with the worst drivers. In February 2025, Forbes Advisor published “Cities With The Worst Drivers, Ranked,” comparing drivers in the 50 most populous U.S. cities. El Paso ranked 20th on this list. Overall, four Texas cities made the rankings, with Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio all placing within the top 15.
According to Forbes, fatal car crashes have increased nationwide in recent years, rising by nearly 10 percent between 2020 and 2022, especially in densely populated urban areas. To determine which cities have the worst drivers, Forbes Advisor analyzed five key metrics: total crashes, deadly crashes, distracted driving, drunk driving, and speeding.
In El Paso, data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) indicates that more than 15,000 accidents were reported in 2023, the most recent year available. Of those accidents, 84 resulted in fatalities, with 23 involving alcohol impairment. Notably, El Paso experienced an approximately 30 percent increase in alcohol-related fatalities compared to the previous year.
Statewide, Texas recorded over 4,200 traffic fatalities in 2023. Nearly 1,100 (about 25 percent) of these deaths involved alcohol-impaired drivers, while over 400 were caused by distracted driving.
Dangerous Driving Behaviors Directly Affect Car Insurance Rates
Your driving habits have a direct impact on your car insurance premiums. Insurance companies evaluate your history of accidents, traffic violations, and claims to assess risk and determine your premium costs. The more dangerous your driving record—including speeding tickets, running red lights, texting while driving, and other reckless behaviors—the higher your insurance rates are likely to be.
Maintaining a clean, accident-free record is one of the best ways to secure lower car insurance premiums.
