Pedestrian Struck and Killed in West El Paso
El Paso Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident on South Desert Boulevard in West El Paso on Sunday. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a vehicle struck the pedestrian around 6:00 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Desert Boulevard near Artcraft Road.
Authorities have released no further information about the pedestrian or the driver. All lanes of South Desert Boulevard near Artcraft Road were shut down for more than four hours. The collision remains under investigation by the El Paso Police Department’s Special Traffic Investigations Unit.
This is the second pedestrian death in El Paso in three days, the first occurring at the intersection of Thornton Street and Country Club Road in the Upper Valley on Friday, October 18. Two others were killed on McCombs Street in Northeast El Paso and Alameda Avenue east of Ascarate Park in the Lower Valley earlier this month.
According to TxDOT, October is one of the deadliest months for pedestrians throughout Texas due to earlier nightfall and less sunlight. In October 2023, 80 pedestrians were killed statewide, which has seen a 22 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities over the past five years. In El Paso, over 201 traffic accidents in 2023 involved pedestrians, resulting in 18 fatalities and 42 serious injuries.
In response, TxDOT has launched a statewide “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” safety campaign, which includes dispersing “walking billboards” worn by TxDOT street teams to remind drivers to operate safely during National Pedestrian Safety Month in October.
